PAPUA TROPICAL BIRDING

PARADISE & NON-PARADISE

THE GENERAL DESCTION

Thanks to its former existence as part of the Austrian continent-New Guinea was still joined to Australia as recently as 1000 years ago.  Papua’s territorial wildlife as big differences, from that of Indonesia.  Here dwell marsupials such as tree kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, cuscuses and possums, as well echidnas, which are among the planet’s few Egg-laying mammals.

Papua is still about 75% cored in the forest and its habitats range from savannas, coastal mangrove and river floodplains, to lowland rainforest, higher-altitude montage forest and the glaciers around  5030m Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya), and Trikora Peak is 4,700m the highest peak in Oceania. These diverse ecosystems harbour more than half the species found in Indonesia. Including over 190 mammals 500 breeding birds, 2650 fish species and more than 2000 types of orchid. Papua shares many plant with Indonesian as well as Australia.

The megastars of the feathered tribe are birds of Paradise, whose fantastically colored males perform weird and wonderful mating dances. Papua and neighboring Papua New Guinea (PNG) are home to nearly all the world’s 40plus species of the birds of paradise. Also here are large, ground-dwelling cassowaries, colorful parrots and lorikeets, unique types of Kookaburra, crowned, pigeons, cockatoos, and the curious bowerbirds, whose male decorate large ground-level dens in their efforts to find mates. More birds of paradise and birds watching in Papua.

Modern economic development and some older human activities threaten Papua’s wildlife. Forest are under assaults from logging (much of it illegal), with the timber smuggled out of Asia, road construction, mining, transmigration settlements and new oil-palm plantations. This means a loss of habitat for many birds and forest animals such as the tree Kangaroo. Commerce in brightly colored birds or their feathers has been a fact continues to be smuggled out of Papua even though trade in their feather had been illegal in Indonesia 1990.

The Baliem Valley is the highest place in Papua and covered with beautiful mountains flora and fauna. Many foreign tourists who want to travel to Papua but before they travel to coastal areas first visit Baliem Valley is happening right now.
